February 19 – March 20
Constellation
The Pisces constellation can be found in the celestial longitude of 330 to 360 degrees and in the Northern Hemisphere, the sun passes through this constellation between February 19 and March 20. The imagery of Pisces is that of two Fish. In Classical Astrological interpretations, the symbol potentially refers to one and/or two ancient Greek tales about Aphrodite. In one legend, a great monster named Typhon was attacking the Greek Gods and two fish carried Aphrodite and her son, Eros (a.k.a. Cupid), to safety. As a result of this myth, the constellation has been known as “Venus Syria cum Cupidine or “Venus et Cupido.” In the second story, an egg fell into the Euphrates River and two fish saved the egg by rolling it ashore. Doves then sat on the egg until it hatched, from which Aphrodite was born. To show her gratitude, Aphrodite placed the two fish in the sky, where the constellation is found today. As a result, the Pisces constellation was also known as “Veneris Mater” at some time. No matter the origin story or what you call the stars, these Fish have a special place in the sky!
Element
Pisces has the element of Water. It may be no surprise since this is the Sign of adorable Fish! Water is special in that it’s constantly moving, such as small ripples in a lake, flowing in a river, and falling down a waterfall. This is movement also flows within all of us and holds the secret to our Soul. Water represents a cycle: conception/beginning and its corresponding death/end. This Element is vital to our livelihood and carries our emotions. Water Signs are natural in acknowledging and validating emotions and feelings. Water Signs are well equipped to accept both positive (such as love and happiness) and negative emotions (such as sadness and anger). Water Signs tend to be considered too emotional, extra sensitive, or have a thin skin. On the contrary, their sensitivity and being in tuned to their emotions is their strength. They are perfect for helping others with deep inner emotional struggles such as being natural therapists and compassionate coaches/advisors. There is no such thing as being too emotional. Water Signs teach all of us that our feelings are our greatest quality, and that true love is boundless.
All that being said, Zodiac Signs with an accented Water Element need to learn that while their emotional nature carries great opportunities and possibilities, it can also hinder them and block them from fully expressing themselves creatively. Water Signs tend to struggle finding a direction since they see the endless possibilities. This is where a Fire Sign may be helpful. A friend that is a Fire Sign can provide the Water Sign the fiery energy that gives them direction and passion towards their goals, which is where their creativity and talents can be discovered and utilized. Otherwise, if alone, Water Signs can be set adrift, being dreamy and imaginative internally but being swayed in different directions.
Quality
There are 3 different Qualities of Expression (also known as Modes or Modalities): Cardinal, Fixed, and Mutable. Pisces is the Water Sign among the four Mutable Quality Zodiac Signs. While Cardinal Signs kick off the start of a season and the Fixed Signs are the embodiment of the season, Mutable Zodiac Signs symbolize the represent the end of a season. They also help us transition into the next upcoming season. For Pisces, it is the end of Winter. For Mutable Signs, they remind us to reflect on what we’ve experienced from this past period, learn from it, and then start to look forward for the transition process for it’s time to move on. Since these Signs represent a time of transition, they are naturally adaptable and flexible when other Signs are innately not so much. For transitions, they have the traits of flexibility and open-mindedness to comprehend situations from many different perspectives. Mutable Signs know that you can’t stop transitions, so it’s best to “go with the flow.”
They are deep thinkers, philosophers, that hold no judgment until they understand all the information. Even after knowing all the angles, their final judgment would not be mean. They do hold opinions even if they aren’t as decisive as other Signs. Mutable Signs just need to take their time to decide since they are so careful and are even willing to change their mind after deciding. As a result, on bad days they can come across as “wishy-washy” since they take their time processing information. These Zodiac Signs are experts of multi-tasking and are commonly moving smoothly between several situations, projects, or relationships. This ability allows them to excel in many areas. They have a great sense of intuition and strong degree of awareness about how to change their lives and how to finish things to move on to the next. They can finish tasks easily and even if they are consumed in professional goals, they are still fun to be around with their relaxed aura. At the same time, they value freedom, which gives the ability to explore their many options or possibilities. However! Since they have their hands on many things at once, their focus and attention are split amongst them all. As a result, they can come across as “scattered” to the other Signs, and Mutable Zodiac Signs would greatly benefit in learning how to provide complete focus. For Pisces, their emotional levels are flexible. This can be seen in how these Fish are also impressionable and, frankly, a bit gullible at times. They are also very sensitive to the extent that they can literally feel others’ emotions and feelings.
Planet
Pisces is unique in that there are two different Planets that can govern this Zodiac Sign: Neptune and/or Jupiter, depending on if you follow Modern Astrology versus Traditional/Classical Astrology. As I mentioned when I posted about Aquarius, I would recommend picking either the Modern or Classical route and stick with that. I personally do the Modern interpretations for the Zodiac Signs, but it is ultimately up to you, and I completely support you if you choose the Traditional meanings! For your convenience, I’ll describe both planets below.
In Modern Astrology, Neptune governs Pisces. Neptune was discovered in 1846, so Classical Astrology used Jupiter before that time. This Planet is the 2nd of the outer planets, placed in between Uranus and Pluto. Neptune is wonderful in that it represents everything magic and deception, including illusions, a fairytale, lies, secrets, dreams, the spiritual unknown, missions, smoke, and even deep space. The giant Planet is cold and icy, and its planetary symbol references the trident of the ancient Greek God of the Seas, Poseidon. You can think of Neptune as diving deep into the deepest oceans… it’s dark and cold… you may be disappointed since it’d be so dark near the bottom that you can’t see anything. However, even the darkest part of the ocean is teeming with life, down to the microscopic level. You can view Neptune in a similar manner. When you see Neptune in your charts, you may come across this sense of cold darkness of some lies, misconceptions, and inconsistencies. The Planet seems to go against what we thought was realistically possible and can be difficult to grasp when it’s accented in someone’s chart. If the Planet Jupiter (representing the purity of our beliefs/judgments) and the Planet Venus (representing life’s beauty) are strong in someone’s chart, then they may be able to peek at Neptune’s cosmical emotion and magical potential and live up to it to a certain degree. If one’s personal planets come in close contact with Neptune, they can become scared, unstable, or be too sensitive to the world’s harsh reality. However, it’s important to remember that while Neptune represents deception, it is a place of full trust and ultimate faith. It’s a place of human kindness, compassion, talents, and amazing potentials. This Planet is any apparition, illusion, or fantasy that we decide to trust, including others that provide a pinch of magic in our lives.
In Classical Astrology, before Neptune was discovered, Jupiter governed Pisces. This Planet is one of the most beneficial Planets, for its purpose is to give us meaning or purpose in our own lives. As large as this Planet is, it shows that moving forward into the future is inevitable with light, faith/spirituality, hope, fortune, blessings on our side. Jupiter is the largest Planet in our Solar System, and its humongous size is symbolic of the boundary that we can visibly see, for beyond that is Saturn and the other outer Planets, who go beyond what we can see directly. Jupiter represents many things, including a teacher, distance, travel, religion, philosophy, moral, protection, and blood. Like what it represents, Jupiter teaches us and protects us. For example, if you see Jupiter in your chart in Capricorn, you may need to remember that when you’re too stuck in your ways, you are unable to make progress. If Jupiter is in Gemini, you may need to remember to make connections between your mental endeavors and your reality. One could view Jupiter as the wise teacher that says, “With your life philosophy and optimism, you can make the best possible future.” Of course, it may be pricey or not smooth sailing, but it is still possible. If you look at your birth chart, try to locate where Jupiter lies… it could very well point to your mission in life, your true calling, your purpose or, in the very least, a very important aspect of your life to which you need to pay close attention. In short, Jupiter is your guide, your guru, your teacher into widening our perspectives and consciousness as large as the Planet itself and do so through the exciting adventure of moving forward with knowledge, acceptance, and satisfaction.
House
The Fish are found in the 12th House and is the last Astrological Zodiac Sign. Since it is the final house, the 12th House represents endings and the subconscious. It can tell us about the final stages of completing a task or project, “tying up loose ends,” old age or the afterlife, and surrendering. It can address psychological fears or how our subconscious controls our choices such as impulses or isolation. This House can also be associated with specific entities that separate one from society, including hospitals, jails/prisons, and institutions. It can also show secret enemies, hidden agendas, suffering, reckoning, and karmic evolution. On a much happier note, it also governs creativity and imagination, which can come in the form of the arts, dance, music, poetry, writing, and film. A celebrity example may be the famous “Queen of Pop” American singer Madonna. She has Pluto (the Planet of transformation and sexual exploration) in the 12th House. There’s no doubt that Madonna has put her art into expressing sexuality in ways that were pushing boundaries and considered quite controversial. Not only that, but an astrologer could also interpret this as Madonna having the ability to focus the notions of personal suffering/shame into a more collective healing.
Personality
These Fish build connections with the arts, music, dance, or any sort of liberal, creative expression. They are selfless and always inclined to help others but may have to remind themselves that they might not receive something in return. They build strong emotional relationships with others based on their intuition along with compassion and tolerance, which is thanks to their ruling planets of Neptune (Modern Astrology) and Jupiter (Classical Astrology). A person of Pisces needs to keep their externally influenced emotions in check and keep their personal boundaries sturdy. Otherwise, their immense emotional capacity and innate empathy can be drained. As mentioned before, they could do a lot for others out of goodwill, but do so with so much eagerness that they forget to monitor and take care of their own personal wellbeing. Remember, dear Fish, that you can’t help others if you can’t help yourself, first!
Compatibility
A general stereotype is that Pisces do not connect as easily with Air Signs, Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius. For example, while the Pisces Fish and the Libra Scales are both romantics at heart, they are just completely different by personality. Piscean men have an artistic side, which makes them extremely imaginative. Also, they are emotionally nurturing and sensitive. Like fellow-Water Sign Cancer, they will make you feel loved. A Pisces man will by extremely compassionate, kind, gentle, and sympathetic towards others. Some consider them the most romantic Zodiac Sign. They will provide you with the comfort, reassurance, and safety that you may want or need. Pisces, in general, as we know, are emotionally sensitive and can intuitively sense the moods and feelings of others. They can be a bit uncomfortable with strangers and need some private time and space. However, Libras are more communicative, impartial, and crave the outgoing social life.
In addition to Air Signs, Pisces tend to struggle regarding compatibility with Fire Signs, Leo, Scorpio, and Aries. Pisces are typically shy introverts and while are reserved and quiet, they are highly emotional, very kind-hearted, and can easily be hurt emotionally. This Fish Water Sign are wonderful at giving love and pleasure, but life can easily overwhelm them. As a result, they will retreat to their personal safe space and prefer not being center stage. Fire Signs, on the other hand, love the spotlight. They also are great lovers and care for their loved ones, but their outgoing crave for attention can be too much for a Pisces.
Instead, this Water Sign seems to do well with Earth Signs, Taurus, Virgo, and Capricorn. These Zodiac Signs can meet the Fish at the same level regarding being introverted and at the same time keep Pisces anchored on their emotions. An Earth Signs practicality and steadfast ways can help make the world seem a little less overwhelming and more stable. In addition to Earth Signs, Pisces tend to do well with their fellow Water Signs, Cancer and Scorpio. These Water Signs “get it” by being on the same wavelength as Pisces in regards to emotions. Sure, they may have some differences. But their Water Element can create that deep emotional bond that Pisces love and need in their lives.
