Auras 101

A Beginner’s Guide

Have you ever experienced a time when you seemed to already know what your friend or acquaintance was thinking or feeling before they expressed it?  Have you felt “bad vibes” from someone or instinctively felt something was negatively “off” about someone?  Well, it’s possible that you are not necessarily a mind-reader or a psychic.  Instead, it’s possible you have a gift in being an aura reader or able to perceive or understand other people’s energy on the auric field.  What does that mean exactly?  In this post, I’ll share what I have learned about auras: what they are, how we can train ourselves to read auras, and more!  So, my friends, let’s have fun exploring this part of the magical world together!

Table of Contents

    What are Auras?

The word “aura” in Latin and Ancient Greek means “breeze, breath, or wind.”  In Middle English, it meant “gentle breeze.”  From there in the late 1800s, the word “aura” began to be used by various spiritualists to describe a subtle, colored emanation from a person’s physical body.  Different people see auras in different ways.  Some see them as halos, some see them as a bubble surrounding the body, some see them as colored misty waves, etc.  To see a person’s aura is to tune in to a special, unique level of consciousness.  It’s not always possible to see auras simply by looking since they are typically invisible.  However, one can usually “feel” them and provide insight.  It’s like when someone gives you a “bad vibe,” which can be that person’s aura expressing itself.

From the perspective of spiritual beliefs, an aura is an unseen-colored spiritual energy field of several layers that every living thing (some claim that even non-living things, too!) emits from their physical body.  Many people claim to be able to see auras, including their color, size, and vibration type.  With that information, one can learn about a person’s mood, emotions, and possibly even personality, patterns, and inclinations.  From the perspective of alternative spiritual medicine, there is a connection between the mind and the body in that one can positively/negatively impact the other.  People are made up of chakras, or vital force centers throughout the body.  (I plan to do a post in the future about chakras, so stay tuned!)  These chakras represent different aspects of a person’s well-being, which I’ll go over briefly later.  A person’s aura can reveal a lot of information by revealing which chakra is most prominent and their physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being.

    Are Auras Vibes?

Good question!  They are very similar, after all!  As we discussed earlier, when someone feels “vibes” from another person, they are sensing that person’s energy, which can express an emotion, mood, or personality.  The word “vibes” is short for “vibrational frequency.”  Auras contain these vibrations.  Our own personal frequency works with others unconsciously.  As a result, by tapping into others’ frequencies, we can see if they are compatible or not with our own vibrations.

    Aura Layers

There are ancient medicinal systems, such as what is found within the Vedas Hindu scriptures, that suggest that there are 7 layers of aura energies.  Some say to think of it as an onion.  The person’s physical body is the core and there are 7 layers wrapped around it.  These 7 layers (also known as bodies or planes) each represent a different aspect of a person’s well-being, such as their physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual health.   For your convenience, I made a quick chart below that goes over these layers:

    Connection with Auras & Chakras

Now that we covered the 7 layers of auras, we can now look at how auras can provide information about a persons’ 1 of 7 chakra points, or energy centers.  (I hope to post just about chakras in the future, so I won’t go into too much detail here.  For the purposes of this post, I will only focus on the aura connection.)  For example, you know how we learned that the Physical Aura Layer is closest to the body?  Well, that layer is also associated with the Root Chakra, which is red in color.  The layers correspond to a different chakra: Emotional Layer -> Sacral Chakra, Mental Layer -> Solar Plexus Chakra, etc.  Some say that certain layers/chakras are more difficult to sense than others, such as if they lie further away from the person’s body, so that is something you can keep in mind.  Below is a chart I made that briefly goes over what we learned about aura colors and their corresponding chakra.  For your convenience, I listed them in the same order as the Aura Layers so you can easily see which layer corresponds to which chakra.

    Aura Colors

Typically, the colors of an aura correlated to one of 7 chakras and depending on the color can provide unique information.  However, auras can be of more than 7 colors!  It’s recommended to learn just the basic 7 colors first before trying to tackle all the different color meanings.  If you can see auras, I recommend learning the meanings of the specific colors that you do see, even if it’s beyond the basic 7 colors.  Below is a slide of charts that goes over various colors that one might see as an aura around them or others:

    1 / 7

    Aura Locations

Just as your aura’s color provides information, the pattern or location of your aura matters, too.  For example, if you have a lot of or strong specific colors on the left side of your body, it is reflecting on the energy you are bringing in.  If you have a lot of or strong specific colors on the right side of your body, it is reflecting the energy you are expressing out into society.  An aura color that appears above the head (such as by the crown chakra) is reflecting on your conscious mental/emotional state at the present time.  An aura color that appears near the bottom of the body (such as by the sacral chakra) is reflecting your subconscious mental/emotional state or feelings you are holding inside at the present time.

    Aura Changing Colors

Your aura reflects your energy and as your energy changes, so does your colored aura.  You cannot “turn off” your aura for it is a part of you.  As a result, your auras can change just as your moods, emotions, or feelings change.  If you notice that your aura tends to be a specific color, look up what that color means because that reflects your dominant energy.  When you know your dominant aura color, you can find ways to balance it.  For example, if someone has a dominant blue aura, they tend to be emotionally sensitive, shy in expressing their innermost thoughts, and may struggle balancing their mind and heart.  So this person may want to work on balancing their blue-colored energy by speaking more openly about their needs or work on thinking logically or more objectively at times.  If they do so, they might find their blue aura become less dominant over time.  Every person’s aura color changes in different ways and in different rates.  If you are in the presence of other people, their energy can stick to you and yours to them.  If you take care on your health, such as avoiding negative drama, getting good rest, and participating in regular self-care, that can change your aura color positively.  This is quite reassuring since you have the potential to take a negative aura color and cleanse it back to a vibrant positive color even if you’re going through a very difficult time that you feel you may not overcome.  In other words, if your aura color is dimmed or smudged, it is unlikely to stay that way forever.  (I will go over ways to cleanse your aura in the next section!)

    Training Yourself to See Auras

Auras are invisible to the naked eye.  However!  Did you know that you can actually train yourself to see auras?  In fact, anyone can learn to read auras.  By training yourself to see auras, you are essentially retraining yourself to view living things’ light and energy in a new and different way.  The key is to trust your instincts and intuition.  It will take time, concentration, patience, and practice, practice, practice.  But it will be rewarding in the end for you will be able to understand yourself and others in a new, deeper way.  For many aura believers, it provides evidence magical world of people containing psychic potential.  In many ways, we already communicate with one another non-verbally, such as through body language as well as through our auric fields.  By training yourself to view auras, you are actually fine-tuning your intuition and psychic potential you already contain within you.  There’s no set timeline in how fast people learn to see auras.  Please remember to be patient with yourself.   So let’s learn some techniques together in how we can learn to see auras!  Let’s have some fun!

How to See Your Own Aura

There are a few techniques you can do to teach yourself to see your own personal aura.  They mainly use meditation or even visualizations to help guide you into seeing your aura.  Once you get the hang of it and feel confident in being able to see your aura, you can go ahead and try to read your friends’ or loved one’s auras.  Please feel free to view these popular suggestions and pick whichever one you like the most!

    (1) Hand Technique

With a white or black background, hold out your hand with your palm facing you.  Stare at your hand for about a minute.  Relax and focus on your palm’s center and calmly try to see the outer outline of your hand.  If you see a radiating glow from this outside lining of your hands, that is your aura.  For more helpful tips, you can try spreading apart and closing your fingers.  You can very gently wave your hand.  This might help make the outline clearer and, thus, help make your aura become more visible to the forefront.  You can also try to rub your hands together to create a warm friction then try to observe any aura colors as you slowly move your hands apart.  It may take a few tries.  But be patient and practice does make perfect!

    (2) Mirror Technique

With a white background, stand in front of a mirror for about a minute.  Focus and concentrate on the central, focal point in the center of your forehead.  Using your peripheral vision, scan around the outside of your head and shoulders to see any colors, which would be your aura.  You can also stare at your hands in the mirror as an alternative approach.

How to See Other People’s Auras

There are some steps you can take to try reading someone else’s aura.  Just make sure that your person consents and is willing to let you try!  Please remember that this may take time and a lot of practice.

    (1) Observing In-Person

Step 1: Black or white background with natural light.  Ask the person you wish to see to stand approximately 10 feet away from you in front of a solid black or solid white background.  You want your lighting to be as natural as possible, as in not being too bright or too dark.

Step 2: Focus on their nose.  Relax and gently focus on the tip of their nose.  If you are relaxed enough, you should be able to take note of your peripheral vision.

Step 3: An outline forms.  At some point, you may start to see an outline around the person’s body.  It may appear as a shadow or a growing, yet thin line.  Stay relaxed and keep looking forward.  Otherwise, if you’re too excited, you may start looking towards the outline, lose focus, and lose progress, which would result in you needing to start the process over again.

Step 4: Peripherally view the outline.  Don’t directly focus on the outline, but instead use your peripheral vision to watch the outline and an aura should start forming.  Be patient because it may take time or a few attempts going through these steps to see an aura.

Step 5: View their aura.  One you feel you can see an aura forming, slowly and gently move your eyes up away from the person’s nose and to their forehead.  By doing so you may be able to better see the aura.  Keep in mind that it’s ok to see just a single aura color around the person, for this is most common with beginners.  As you gain experience and proficiency, you may start seeing multiple colors in different locations.

    (2) Observing a Photo

Another technique you can try is to stare and gently focus on a person’s photo for about 45 seconds to a minute.  But try to keep only one eye open with the other closed.  Some say this can be a bit more difficult and may take longer after a few attempts.  But many say that they can see a colored aura grow around the person in the image.

    (3) Sensing Auras

Not able to actually see any colors?  That’s ok, too!  Many people are still able to read auras, and you can too!  Using all 5 of your senses, try to observe as much about this person as possible (like how do they look, smell, or sound?).  How does it make you feel?  Are you having any particular emotional response?  Using your instinct and intuition, give this person an aura color.  Try not to think of all the color meanings before observing the person.  Let the person’s energy guide you to their color.

Other Ways to Learn Your Aura

If you are not wanting to or not able to view auras for yourself, there are several other ways you can learn about your aura.  Below are some examples you can explore if you are interested to see what color and information your aura may hold for you:

    (a) Tests & Apps

There are tests online you can take that predicts the color of your aura.  They tend to ask you questions about your preferences, habits, and personality.  However, in the end, you will be the one to determine whether the results are accurate.  Below are a couple of these online tests you can try out if you are interested:

Otherwise, there are some apps out there available.  A couple of apps include Aura & Energy and AURLA.  However, while the virtual readings are free, some say they are not as accurate.  Again, only you can determine that from your experience.

    (b) Aura Portraits

If you happen to live in a city, there’s a chance there’s a studio where one can have their photograph taken, which will reveal your aura.  These photos will provide physical insight as to your state of consciousness and the energy you hold and give.  One such studio is AURA AURA, which has a strong Instagram following.  It’s important to note that one cannot simply take these aura portraits from your cell phone.  Photographers who do these aura portraits say that a specific camera (called an aura camera) is needed to show your colored energy emanation.  An aura camera is special in that it uses sensors to read your body’s frequencies speeds through an algorithm, which expresses them in colors.  For example, a red aura measures between 400-480 THz.  Another example is an indigo aura reads between 620-670 THz.  There’s another type of aural portraits, called Kirlian photography, that supposedly shows one’s aura as an egg-shaped halo around your body.  Aura portraits are quite a popular, fun, and reasonably affordable way to get an actual view of your aura!

    (c) In-Person Readings

Of course, one can make an appointment with someone who has the ability to see auras.  This can be done in-person (chances are higher to find someone with this gift if you are near a big city) or virtually online (which can take place anywhere).  Of course, the experience of having your aura revealed to you by a person is as legitimate as you make them out to be.  Many clients find this experience quite rewarding and insightful.  If you trust this person’s gift or advice, they might be able to give you tips on balancing or cleansing your aura.  Other clients with a lack of clarity or more having more questions than answers.  It all depends on the person.

    Compatibility

Like with astrological zodiac signs, some people claim that people can be more compatible with others depending on their aura color.  It’s like when you feel you and another person are on the same wavelength, share a similar vibe, or simply seem to get along easily. Below is a quick chart for your convenience:

    Cleansing Your Aura

Many times we pick up negative energies from others, which may result in us feeling depressed, anxious, exhausted, etc.  Sometimes we exert negative energy ourselves.  These feelings, mind sets, or behaviors can lead us to have negative, smudged, or dirty-colored aura colors.  This would be the time to clean up your aura and, thus, change its color over a period of time.  There are many techniques one could do to cleanse your aura.  So take a look through this list of suggestions and see if there’s any that you think would help you:

    Controversy

Of course, as with anything in the magical world, the notion of auras comes with its controversy.  Scientifically-speaking, there are no studies to support the existence of auras, let alone that they reflect your state of consciousness or being. For people who claim to see auras, there was a 2012 study done by the University of Granada Department of Experimental Psychology that addresses the possibility of aura readers having the neuropsychological phenomenon known as “emotional synesthesia,” which would explain their ability.  Also, other scientists claim that seeing auras could be the result of afterimages, or visual illusions/hallucinations and may even be caused by things affecting the brain, such as migraines, visual/optical disorders, epilepsy, or psychedelic drugs such as LSD.  As such, science has repeatedly concluded that auras simply do not exist.  That being said, nowadays there are some within the scientific community that do support the notion of all living things possessing an energy field around them.  For example, a 2018 article in the Journal of Traditional Chinese Medical Sciences seems to suggest that there might be an “energy system” in the human body that contain both visible and invisible elements and measuring the body’s emitting energies may require equipment that are beyond its current capabilities.  Of course, it is unknown at this time if these energy fields are the result of physical or spiritual causes.

Phew!  We sure covered a lot about auras!  What do you think?  Do you believe in auras, or do you see them?  Please let me know your thoughts on the subject!  I will make this conclusion short, especially considering you’ve made it through this really long post.  My friends, thank you for your time and support, as always.  I look forward to learning and sharing more with you!
