    Constellation

Virgo spans the 150-180th degree of the Zodiac and has different origins depending on which mythology you examine.  Virgo’s image is that of a young woman, a Maiden, or a virgin. In ancient Greek and Roman mythology, the Virgo Constellation reflects Demeter (Greek Goddess of Harvest), or her daughter, Persephone (Queen of the Underworld).  Another connection is to the tale of Parthenos (which translates to “virgin” in Greek).  There are two myths with Parthenos.  First, there’s the story of her and her sister jumping off a cliff to save themselves from their terrifying father.  Apollo (Greek God of archery, music/dance, and truth) saved them and took them to safety in nearby cities, where the girls were worshipped as local Goddesses.  Second, there’s the tale of Parthenos being the daughter of Apollo and died of a young age.  To commemorate her passing, Apollo made her into the Virgo Constellation.  Another potential origin is that of Erigone, an Athenian maiden and daughter of Icarius.  After the heart wrenching murder of Icarius, Erigon’s dog, Maera, threw herself off a cliff, and Erigone hanged herself.  Zeus or Dionysus (God of wine, harvest, festivities) felt pity and reunited the family in the stars.  Erigone became the Constellation Virgo.  Icarius became the Constellation Bootes.  And Maera became the Constellation Canis Minor.  Yet another origin story of Virgo is the image of Astraea, the celestial virgin and the Goddess of purity, innocence, justice, and precision.  (Keep in mind, this is a different Goddess than Asteria, the Goddess of the stars.)  Astraea was one of the last immortals to live among humans during the Golden Age.  In the Iron Age, she ran away from humanity’s new wickedness and ascended to the heavens to become the Constellation Virgo.  It’s quite amazing to see how one Constellation can provide so many stories!

    Element

Virgo possesses the element of Earth.  This element can be considered the foundation of all elements.  It’s the basis for the other three (air, water, fire) and, hey, we even live on the planet Earth, which has the same name for a reason!  As an Earth Sign, it’s immediately clear that they are practical by nature.  They know how to plan, work hard putting that plan into action, and value the material things in life.  They sometimes expect others to share their practical views and reasonable approaches to life with the ability of being solid and specific.

The element of Earth represents physical matter, such as our bodies, food, finances, and daily routines.  Earth Signs can get stuck in their ways for long periods of time (like years!) and be too afraid to change their routine.  If stuck in a challenging situation, they will stick to their ways that they know or are convinced will work, even if it makes them unhappy, stay stuck at an unsatisfying job just so it makes ends meet, or neglects their creativity or intelligence capabilities.  To balance Earth, some Air elements may be beneficial.  Air provides something a little more transparent, unstable, and fast, which will be helpful to shake the Earth Signs a little off balance to get them unstuck from hard habits, make changes to their daily routines or life without regrets, and to stop questioning the choices they’ve made in the past.  It will be important to have their sense of purpose lucid and their feelings/emotions being sturdy.

    Quality

There are 3 different Qualities of Expression (also known as Modes or Modalities):  Cardinal, Fixed, and Mutable.  Virgo is the Earth Sign among the four Mutable Quality Zodiac Signs.  While Cardinal Signs kick off the start of a season and the Fixed Signs are the embodiment of the season, Mutable Zodiac Signs symbolize the represent the end of a season.  They also help us transition into the next upcoming season.  For Virgo, it is the end of Summer.  For Mutable Signs, they remind us to reflect on what we’ve experienced from this past period, learn from it, and then start to look forward for the transition process for it’s time to move on.  Since these Signs represent a time of transition, they are naturally adaptable and flexible when other Signs are innately not so much.  For transitions, you have the traits of flexibility and open-mindedness to comprehend situations from many different perspectives.  Mutable Signs know that you can’t stop transitions so it’s best to “go with the flow.”

They are deep thinkers, philosophers, that hold no judgment until they understand all the information.  Even after knowing all the angles, their final judgment would not be mean.  They do hold opinions even if they aren’t as decisive as other Signs.  Mutable Signs just need to take their time to decide since they are so careful and are even willing to change their mind after deciding. As a result, on bad days they can come across as “wishy-washy” since they take their time processing information.  These Zodiac Signs are experts of multi-tasking and are commonly moving smoothly between several situations, projects, or relationships.  This ability allows them to excel in many areas.  They have a great sense of intuition and strong degree of awareness about how to change their lives and how to finish things to move on to the next.  They can finish tasks easily and even if they are consumed in professional goals, they are still fun to be around with their relaxed aura.  At the same time, they value freedom, which gives the ability to explore their many options or possibilities.  However, since they have their hands on many things at once, their focus and attention are split among them all.  As a result, they can come across as “scattered” to the other Signs and Mutable Zodiac Signs would greatly benefit in how to provide complete focus.  Virgos can be considered the ultimate multi-tasker.  The Maiden is also helpful and versatile, which the other Signs appreciate.  Lastly, a Virgo is attentive to details, which is beneficial if you’re working on a project with them.

    Planet

The Planet Mercury governs Virgo.  This small Planet is located closest to the Sun and with this unique connection is the messenger of Gods, carrying information from one plane of existence to another.  It is the Planet of communication in various forms.  For example, Mercury rules over both Gemini (an Air Sign that can show our mentality and ideas) and Virgo (an Earth Sign that can express our daily routines/habits, and physiology).  Communication happens both externally (towards others directly or indirectly based on our actions) and internally (when we speak to ourselves or simply think).  Mercury is also the Planet of information and where our mind goes most often.  When this Planet appears in a chart accented, it oftentimes highlights a special relationship to a sibling (particularly a brother).  How we speak plays a huge role in Mercury.  Everything from how we express our thoughts, our word choice, and the quality and speed of which we talk can be found in Mercury.  Another way that Mercury is observed can be found in its orbit around the Sun.  This little Planet moves quickly (faster than the others!) and, as a result, could be used to discuss transportation, including driving a car or walking.  It keeps going and going and going and will not stop until it needs someone/something to give it rational attention and a helping hand.  In short, Mercury can be summed up as a Planet of communication, expression through words (mental) and hands (physical), and close bonds with the challenges that come with them.

    House

Virgo is found in the 6th House, that of health and work.  It focuses on wellness, including fitness/exercise, diets, and natural, healthy living.  For work, it represents your schedules, daily routines, organization, odd jobs, volunteering, and your helpfulness and service to others.  It looks at your career and its balance with your working life.  The 6th House reminds us to maintain a healthy balance with our physical and mental/spiritual energies.  A celebrity example may be famous American rapper and producer Jay-Z, who is considered a mogul or one of the most powerful people in the music industry as of today.  He has the Planet Mars (of passion and action) in his 6th House.  An Astrologer may interpret this as him having an innate gift of having a sturdy work ethic and the aptitude needed to build his music empire.

    Personality

Being one of the most cautious Zodiac Signs, a Virgo focuses on the smallest of details and carries a strong perception of humanity.  They are practical, logical, and don’t leave things to chance but rather make their decisions based on more methodological approaches.  Also, as a result, they have a greater tendency to put up a wall to protect their tender heart from the outside world.  Virgos tend to be misunderstood by the other Zodiac Signs.  If a Virgo feels one way but is confronted with reason/logic that opposes it, they will put aside and invalidate their feelings to go with the practical side of things.  Like a Virgin Maiden that they represent, a Virgo’s personality and traits are like that of someone being freshly born and experiencing everything for the first time.  By nature, this Zodiac Sign is conservative, practical, and carries a lot of strength in character.  Their lives tend to be shaped in a well-organized manner with well-defined dreams and goals even if there are turbulent times that may seem chaotic.  Virgos tend to be naturally good communicators both verbally and in writing.  Virgos also have the tendency to be overly critical and can hyper focus on the little details others may miss or not think matter as much.  Virgos should be aware that they may face a few challenges and fail more than once in their lifetime.  It can seem overwhelming to face what seems to be defeat after defeat.  Virgos can succumb to isolation, feeling of being lost or trapped, turn to substances for comfort, and/or simply sit from afar judging others negatively.  So it’s important for this Zodiac Sign to remember that with the downturns in life, there is also an oncoming upswing on the way!  Like their Zodiac Sign image, a Virgo may see the purity and justice in others and want their life mission to be to help others for greater good.  And they are very capable of achieving it!

    Compatibility

Virgos might have a tougher time building strong connections with Fire Signs, Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius.  By nature, a Virgo is a pacifist and perfectionist who prefers things that are more clean and orderly.  Fire Signs, by contrast, do not mind or sometimes enjoy the messy and raw aspects of life.  This conflict of natural personalities can prove to be too much work for either the Fire Signs or the Virgo.

Air Signs, Aquarius, Gemini, and Libra may require more time for compatibility for Virgos.  Virgos may come across as more immature when it comes to their views on innocence, purity, and being more old-fashioned when it comes to love.  An Air Sign would rather have a more contemporary arrangement between partners.  This could conflict with the Virgo’s innate sense of wanting the perfect, ideal love that may never completely satisfy them otherwise.

A Virgo would have much better luck with fellow Earth Signs, Capricorn, and Taurus.  They would be able to instinctively understand each other and be able to a build strong trust between them that would not be easy to break.  Earth Signs also tend to have better ease and flow with communication between one another.

Virgos may also have better compatibility chances with Water Signs, Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces.  This is because Water Signs (strong sense of the heart) will be able to balance Virgo’s Earth Element (strong sense of the mind) and provide the inspirational, wonderful chance to enter each other’s world.  Water Signs can also assist a Virgo in building trust and bring awareness and validity to the Virgo’s emotions/feelings.  Virgos are very patient by nature and will be capable of waiting for a Water Sign to get through their emotional whirlwinds, and provide that stability and security that the Water Sign would want from a relationship.

Virgo men are your teddy bears.  They are comforting, nurturing, soothing, gentle, and have the utmost kindness.  At the same time, they can have great communication and practicality.  With the strength of keen observation, they can analyze and judge others.  Virgo men prefer stability and order and along with their sensitive side can be quite service-oriented.  No matter who they befriend, any Virgo can be a great Zodiac Sign that can provide something stable and reliable into practically any relationship.

And I think that pretty much finishes up on the Zodiac Sign of Virgo!  I sure learned a lot and, as always, I did an overview summary in this little handy-dandy chart below.  I hope you might find it a little useful.

Some of my closest friends are Virgos.  Do you know someone who is a Virgo?  Do they match this personality description, or do they differ in some ways?  Are you a Virgo and, if so, what are some similarities and difference you have based on this general description of your Zodiac Sign?  I bet you can guess what I’m going to say next.  As always, it’s ok if this description is not 100% accurate for you or someone you know.  This is just a generalization or stereotype that can provide someone a place on where to start and then build from there.  I really liked learning more about this Zodiac Sign and I hope you did, as well!  Thank you very much for your time in reading this post and I’m stoked to discover what the next Zodiac Sign is all about!

Success is getting what you want, happiness is wanting what you get.”
