Pregnancy Tarot Spreads

I’m sorry I haven’t been able to post as frequently as I wished (life gets in the way sometimes!).  Did you know that the most common birthdays in the United States are in September??  Yes!  In fact, 9 of the top 10 birthdays fall between September 9 – 20!  Why is that?  Well, frankly speaking, more couples are conceiving during December and around the winter holidays.  Kind of makes sense since they are more likely to conceive during the season of many celebrations (Christmas, New Years, Hanukkah, Yule, Kwanzaa, and more!!).  So I thought it would be fun to do a post on various Pregnancy/”Parent-to-be”-themed Tarot Spreads as a big December 2022 post, hahaha!

These Spreads may be called “Pregnancy” Tarot Spreads, but almost all of them can be used for any form of parenting:  Those who are merely thinking about being a parent.  Those who are actively trying to conceive and carry a pregnancy.  Fathers or partners who are supporting their pregnant other half.  Parents who are looking into adoption, fostering, or surrogacy.  So if you have children on your mind or are merely curious to see what the cards say, give these a try!  Who knows?!  Maybe you’ll find yourself being one of many parents who have a child whose birthday lies in September!

Table of Contents

NOTE: If you are a pregnant/expecting-parent-to-be Tarot Card practitioner, it can be difficult/tricky to do a Reading for yourself.  Hormones or emotional/mental attachments can play a huge influence on the cards and one’s interpretations of the cards.  That’s why it’s typically recommended to either have someone else do your Reading or have a friend/loved one assist you in interpretating the cards to keep the results as objective as possible.

For the Example Readings, Student A had her Reading done, for she is experiencing a lot regarding this topic.  As a background, Student A is happily married with she and her husband considering having children.  However!  Student A was medically advised to not have children “naturally” through pregnancy due to health reasons.  As a result, Student A and her husband are considering alternative methods of growing their family.  See what the Example Readings told her!

    (1) 5-Card Am I Ready for Pregnancy? Spread by Zorya Wellness

Simply thinking about pregnancy/birth and if you’re ready for it?  This is a good, simple Spread that may help guide you to the answers you seek.

    Example Reading

Student A, facing with the difficult reality that pregnancy was not advised, asked if she should even have children at all. Maybe this was a sign from the Universe that she just wasn’t meant to have kids? The cards were then revealed:

    Interpretation

If Student A desires to have children, then she has the ability to make that happen, she just needs to choose to do so and can transform into a higher self as she embarks on that journey (Card 1). But her body may, indeed, not be ready or able to carry a pregnancy (Card 2). She should listen to her body and protect and care for it, if need be. However, mentally, Student A is prepared for the journey into motherhood (Card 3). She carries traits/qualities that are ideal for being a parent: being well-off, generous, supportive, affectionate, wise, and having maternal instinct. To be better prepared, Student A merely needs to simply make a decision (Card 4). Once a decision is made, real progress can be made on this major life journey that will end with great success (Card 4). It directly connects with Card 1 in that Student A needs to build confidence and make the decision to start the journey that she desires. If she chooses to pursue parenthood, she will find help in the form of supportive friends/family along with celebrations, having fun, and emotional/physical healing (Card 5). Card 5, in particular, is auspicious for celebrations involving birth/pregnancy. In short, the Cards may suggest that Student A’s body being unable to safely carry children is not necessarily a sign from the Universe that she should not have children altogether. Rather, it shows great outcomes and support, should she choose to make the journey.

    (2) 5-Card Pregnancy Journey Tarot Spread by Kate May Modern Day Mystic

This is a good Spread to try when you are actively expecting the arrival of a child.

    Example Reading

For Student A, she is not actively expecting children but is nearly exploring her options. She voiced that for this Spread, she would be asking how her journey would be should she choose to ignore doctors’ advice and try to conceive and carry a pregnancy to term as of this moment. The cards showed the following:

    Interpretation

As of this moment in time, if Student A were to carry a pregnancy, the energy would be one full of anxiety and stress (Card 1). Student A said she has a long history of anxiety, worrying, and depression. Given that information, even though this card may normally be temporary in nature, with Student’s A history of excessive worrying and anxiety, this energy would probably be persistent throughout the whole pregnancy journey. During her pregnancy, Student A would need to overcome challenges regarding balance and she’ll need to be sure to make good decisions to best safeguard her future (Card 2). It also points back to her mentality addictions of excessive worrying/anxiety, which would continue to be a challenge throughout the pregnancy (Card 2 & Card 1). She will see her situation as it is (that her pregnancy journey is far from ideal or not how she dreamed it would be) so to improve it, she’ll have to change her situation through her mentality (Card 3). This card, yet again, points to her addictions/temptations of negative thinking, anxiety, and worry (Card 3). The best way Student A can prepare for the birth of her child would be through self-healing (Card 4). It’s advised she take some “alone time” to process her excessive, negative thoughts and feelings about the situation (Card 4). For supportive outside influences, it may come in the unlikeliest of ways. It shows a sudden, inevitable event that will be the result of historical factors adding up over time (Card 5). This blessing in disguise may reveal new possibilities and release Student A from so much stress and frustration (Card 5). Student A did not find comfort or joy from this Reading, understandably. At this point, she felt that maybe the “cons” of pregnancy are outweighing the “pros”. Even with this in mind, she was willing to continue with the next Spread, which is more pregnancy-themed, as well.

    (3) 7-Card Pregnancy Tarot Spread inspired by MalvaTarot, arranged by Your Friendly Familiar

This Spread is more pregnancy-focused. It focuses on the Mother’s health/well-being and the pregnancy/birth. If you’re thinking about you or your partner going through pregnancy, then try out this Spread.

    Example Reading

Student A tried keeping an open mind about pregnancy, despite the undesirable Reading outcome previously. She asked for details about her pregnancy, should she choose to go down that path.

    Interpretation

Student A has the potential to go down the pregnancy path if she chose to do so (Card 1).  Even though it was advised that she does not risk pregnancy, the cards that it is at least technically possible for her, should she wish to try, and she may receive good luck and success in doing so (Card 1).  (Student A did confirm here that this is the case for her; she may physically be capable of getting pregnant, but the pregnancy journey would be quite high-risk for both her and the fetus due to health reasons.)  It’s important to note that Card 1 is associated with children and family, which emphasizes the good news for this card position.  As for Student A’s husband, he would also be quite supportive throughout the pregnancy journey (Card 2).  He would be exciting by the upcoming sudden, upcoming changes and will be a good partner (Card 2).  He might also receive good news in the form of emails, calls, etc. about work opportunities, which could be welcomed finically-speaking (Card 2).  However, while this is all good news, the timing may be at a rocky time financially (Card 3).  Around the time of conception and early pregnancy, there may be a great test of resources and financial loss and Student A may even become greatly worried/anxious about the situation (Card 3).

Throughout the pregnancy, Student A will be working on self-exploration, healing, and seeking their own counsel (Card 4).  It’s possible that this isolation may be a side-effect of trying to save money and cut costs by staying indoors/alone as often as possible.  The birth itself will have a positive outcome (Card 5).  Balance, objectivity, and perception is extremely important with the new arrival.  It’s important to note that both Card 4 (The Hermit) and Card 5 (Justice) appeared in the 2nd 5-Card Pregnancy Spread earlier.  Not only are these cards greatly emphasized or important to pay attention to, but some think that makes the Readings more accurate or more likely to take place as of that moment, due to the consistency of the cards/theme.  When the baby is born, it will be healthy, and people will give money, gifts, or donations to Student A and her husband in celebration of the arrival (Card 6).  Financial struggles will certainly improve (Card 6).  The Wisdom Message for Student A to keep in mind is “Take control; you are protected.”  She needs to believe in herself and know that things would improve in time (Card 7).  She can trust that the Universe has something planned for her and she can trust in herself for making the right decisions and by living in the present (Card 7).

    (4) 8-Card Pregnancy Bond Spread by MoonMamaOracle-Tarot/Oracle Spreads

This Spread is great to use not just for pregnant women, but any parent-to-be, whether that’s through adoption, surrogacy, fostering, etc.  This spread is unique because it purely focuses on the bond and relationship between the soon-to-be parent and the child that is joining the family.

    Example Reading

Student A put her energy into asking more about the bond she may expect between her and a child. She put the thought of pregnancy aside and simply wanted to know the manner of her relationship between her and her future child, no matter if it was the result of adoption, fostering, or surrogacy.

    Interpretation

As of this very moment, Student A’s energy is one of love and family (Card 1).  It also expresses family support, which Student A would expect to provide and give the child (Card 1).  The child will be one that gifts Student A with a spiritual direction and a sense of unity, support, and self-realization (Card 2).  The child would remind Student A to “make the most of one’s gifts” and child is a gift that Student A would cherish and make the most of (Card 2).  The child would love Student A’s protectiveness of her belongings, property, and, of course, her child (Card 3).  Student A would use maternal instincts and wits to discover the truth and at some points may reveal her humanness by regressing a few times (Card 3).  But the child will love those qualities about her, if not when they’re little, but they are grown and look back at their upbringing.  Student A and her child would grow a strong bond together during times of celebration, abundance, and events that are friend/family oriented (Card 4).  Indulgence, simple fun, enjoying company, and being carefree will be some of the most precious moments for both Student and the child (Card 4).  At the same time, the child will challenge Student A to “manifest her desires” and to act by connecting herself with her true self with pure intention (Card 5).  Even though the times when the child challenges their mother will be difficult, they serve a higher, positive purpose (Card 5).

Friends and family looking from afar may see that Student A’s child appears “easy-going,” calm, and maybe enjoys spending time alone (Card 6).  It’s possible that family/friends may even see Student A recovering from a lot of the stress and anxiety she previously expressed during earlier phases of her motherhood journey (Card 6).  Before Student A and her child meet, the child’s Soul wishes to remind their to-be mother that times of habitual great anxiety, stress, and worry can be over inconsequential things (Card 7).  Things will be ok and will work out ok; the stress, anxiety should be only temporary (Card 7).  The mental health concerns should be addressed to the best of Student A’s ability.  Student A’s spirit guides wish to remind her that when it comes to welcoming a child into her family as their mother, a lot of things come down to balance, decision making, and managing money (Card 8).  Work-life balance is extremely important when it comes to child-raising and hard decisions will have to be made with the child’s best interest being the top priority (such as where to live or where to work) (Card 8).

    (5) 10-Card Thinking About Having Children Spread inspired by Emily Marie, arranged by Your Friendly Familiar

This is one of my personal favorite Spreads, because it work for anyone who is merely thinking about (but not yet started the process of) welcoming a child into their life, whether that’s through pregnancy, surrogacy, adoption, or fostering.  This Spread has also been pretty accurate so far based on multiple Readings done by Students.  So give this one a try!

    Example Reading

Student A cleared her head and again focused on her desire to having a child with her husband. As of this moment, pregnancy is “off the table” of possibilities for her. She says she’s quite sure she wants to have a child by alternative means (surrogacy or adoption), but is uncertain if she’s still ready to have a child. The cards revealed the following:

    Interpretation

As of this very moment in time, Student A is ready for a child (Card 1).  Card 1 (2 of Pentacles) appeared in the previous Reading in form of a message from her spirit guides.  So with this message in her mind and she follows this advice, Student A is ready for children.  However, it is still not yet known whether Student A truly has the confidence to be a parent (Card 2).  She’s at a mental stalemate and needs to pause and think before making the decision to further pursue parenthood (Card 2).  It might be a sign that she and her husband will live in separate places for a while first, which would be the time to gather more confidence and then further pursuing having a child.  That being said, if or when Student A would become a parent, she would be happy to a mother (Card 3).  She will develop spiritually and expand with an integration of her mind and spirit (Card 3).  Card 3 (The Hierophant) also appeared in the previous Reading in describing what the child’s energy would give Student A.  So it’s something to keep in mind.

As for her husband, when it comes to being supportive, he is seen in a more neutral position (Card 4).  It’s possible that he might be supportive from afar, such as living/working away from where Student A and the child would be living.  Student A’s husband would be making sacrifices for her and the child, but the rewards (such as everyone living together under one roof) may not be at the ideal timing given his career ambitions (Card 4).  (Student A said this was actually a topic of discussion between her and her husband and was surprised at the accuracy of this card, in particular.)  Like many, if not most, parents, Student A will probably feel “boxed in” or a lack of freedom (Card 5).  Making plans ahead of time, having balance, and an emphasis in partnership between Student A and her husband will be key is helping with this feeling (Card 5).  To be better prepared for parenting, the cards suggest Student A to be single-minded, an astute strategist, and highly ambitious (Card 6).  Student A needs to have the determination and strength to be able to stand alone in parenting a child just in case circumstances make it so (like if she and her husband indeed live apart for a while) (Card 6).  She is capable of doing so but she may need to change her mindset so she has the confidence to know she is.

Student A has high expectations for what education she wants to provide her child.  However, she may find that these grand dreams, ideals may inevitably collapse due to factors beyond her control (Card 7).  However, she needs to remember to surrender to these sudden changes because there will be benefits that will appear once the smoke clears (Card 7).  On a better note, the child’s health should not be one of major concern (Card 8).  When it comes to Student A’s family, she’ll need to address some past issues, overcome them or let them go, and then she’ll be able to look back at moments with pleasure (Card 9).  Those who Student A calls family will be supportive, and, in the meantime, Student A’s confidence and wisdom will grow with her further spiritual development (Card 9).  Lastly, Student A can look forward to a time when they can have some quiet time and conserve their energy after many years of habitual stress/anxiety (Card 10).  Maybe counseling/therapy will also provide further guidance on the parenting journey.  Either way, Student A will have a more mentally peaceful future even though the present may feel chaotic or stressful (Card 10).

    (6) 13-Card Pregnancy Tarot Spread by Angelorum

This is a wonderful, detailed spread for those think about or actively going through pregnancy or surrogacy.  It goes further than most Spreads by giving you information from conception, the 3 trimesters, and birth.

    Example Reading

Student A revealed that she and her husband were actively looking into surrogacy as an option. With this information, this 13-Card Spread was conducted with the focus on surrogacy being the method of Student A having a child in the future.

    Interpretation

During the 1st trimester of the baby’s development in the surrogacy process, the mother may feel trapped or even hopeless maybe due to a series of bad luck or experiences (Card 1).  Surrogacy is very expensive.  So it’s probable that these feelings are financial in nature.  There could be problems at work and/or a sense of frustration, panic, or humiliation (Card 1).  As for the baby, the surrogacy process will be “full steam ahead” and move forward seemingly fast (Card 2).  Having a baby on the way is inspiring (Card 2), but it will probably make Student A stressed about needing to get things done yesterday to be ready on top of all of the other stresses she’s probably feeling.  Despite Student A’s intense negative thoughts/feelings, her relationship with her husband will still be considered peaceful (Card 3).  It could be because he is distancing himself from all of the extra complications/drama or he’s actually, physically traveling/working/living apart from Student A (Card 3).

For the 2nd trimester, Student A’s mentality will shift from one of panic/hopeless to one of taking charge through logic and reasoning to get things done (Card 4).  It’s like during this time she’ll be “buckling down” on preparing for motherhood and will take the initiative on relationship/domestic affairs (Card 4).  For the baby and the surrogacy, Card 5is one that predicts motherhood and children.  It suggests that the baby will continue to develop well and grow healthily with the help of the surrogate mother’s compassion, nurture, love, and happiness through the process (Card 5).  When it comes between Student A and her husband, during this time it’s all about 2 things: money and making a choice (Card 6).  It’s possible this will be the time when Student A and her husband will have to make a final decision as to where they’ll live and/or work (Card 6).  Also, budgeting and finances involving the surrogacy process will be the primary focus in the relationship during this period (Card 6).

In the 3rd trimester, is reveals an auspicious beginning for Student A (Card 7).  Perhaps she’s offered a new job or will receive good news concerning finances (Card 7).  Things will be looking up if Student A continues to work hard and stay methodical, dedicated, practical, and reliable when it comes to money (Card 7).  For the baby in the surrogacy process, things will continue to do well, and it will be shown it was worth the investment (Card 8).  The time and money will be well spent and the baby is going to have a secure home, an invested parent, and more assured future benefits (Card 8).  With Student A and her husband, they will both be in a strong position together (Card 9).  They have fought long and hard to get where they are at this point and they will be exhausted (Card 9).  But all of that effort will be worth all of it in the form of support from others (Card 9).

When Student A and her husband make the final decision to go forward with surrogacy and begin the process, it will be off to a fantastic start!  Both cards involving conception (Card 10 and Card 11) are Aces, which highlight and emphasize the important partnership between the two of them.  This will be an exciting time of new beginnings and is greatly auspicious for both parents (Card 10 and Card 11).  Card 10 (Ace of Wands) highlights the husband’s male virility start of a family and Card 11 (Ace of Cups) brings Student A’s gift of love and key emotional events: particularly fertility, pregnancy, birth, and motherhood.  It is as good of cards as one can get for such a Reading in these positions.

When the baby is born, things may seem exciting yet overwhelming, joyful yet nerve-wracking, blissful yet exhausting.  That’s ok!  It’s time of moderation and personal healing (Card 12).  Student A should remember to temper her thoughts and actions to find harmony and balance (Card 12).  It’s the start of a spiritual journey and Student A will connect with her spirit guides who will give her advice from time to time (Card 12).  So during this chaotic, exciting time, Student A will be guided to find peace (Card 12).  And when it comes to the baby’s sex… it may not be so clear if the baby will be male or female (Card 13).  For Card 10 (Ace of Wands), it is more masculine with the phallic wand imagery.  For Card 11(Ace of Cups), it’s more feminine by nature in its meanings with motherhood.  It’s very possible this Soul does not wish to have its sex known for now.  However!  If one had to guess, one could argue that the Sun (Card 13) actually has an image of a boy, so maybe it’s a higher likelihood of having a male child if this surrogacy process were to take place.  On the other hand, one could argue that because Card 10 (Ace of Wands) and Card 11 (Ace of Cups) are quite masculine/feminine respectively and Card 13 (The Sun) is such a highly auspicious card revealing good news about children… it’s possible that Student A and her husband could expect twins: one male and one female.  Either way, Card 13 (The Sun) is one that tells Student A to enjoy her success into parenthood for she will make a great achievement, be in good health, and everything in her life will improve.

    Deck Used

For these Spreads, I used the classic “Rider-Waite Tarot” Deck. You can find a Deck in practically any place that sells Tarot Cards since they are considered a classic and one of, if not the most, popular of Decks. It’s also the Deck I typically recommend for beginners.
